Bathurst & Back is a great short trip out of Sydney which could be condensed into a long weekend or expanded into two weeks of exploring.

The Great Western Highway across the Blue Mountains to Bathurst is one of Australia's most historic roads - across which flowed a stream of settlers to the vast areas of the slopes and plains of wester inland New South Wales. Soldiers, convicts and gold diggers have all trudged and driven across the harsh and rocky ridge of the Great Dividing Range barrier. In the early days of the colony of New South Wales it was likely the construction of this road over the Blue Mountains to the fertile plains beyond that saved the small settlement from abandonment.

Of course, nowadays we get to enjoy a major road passing through many towns with facilities, so fuel and supplies are readily available.

This itinerary is an excellent first trip for the caravanning novice. It also makes an ideal section as part of a longer trip. The driving directions, accommodation options, and things to see and do listed in this itinerary are all our recommendations based on over 30-years of caravanning experience - but it is ultimately your choice to decide what you do during your travels! Even though we have recommended the number of days to stay in each place, you may decide to travel faster, or stay longer.

If you don't have a caravan, motorhome, or similar - this itinerary could still be used as most of the Accommodation Options provided also have holiday cabins!

This plan does not specifically cater toward travelling with pets, although our Accommodation Options do note when accommodation is pet friendly.
