This caravan trip plan takes the scenic route out of Melbourne, exploring The Grampians in Victoria and the Murray River & Barossa Valley in South Australia before joining the Stuart Highway - which takes us from the southern states to the arid Red Centre.

This trip is a diverse and amazing journey through some of Australia's most iconic landscapes, taking in some of the country's most cultural, well-known and spectacular geological landmarks.

Our 19-day Melbourne to Alice Springs - City to the Ouback itinerary is an excellent first trip for the caravanning novice. Travel is on highways and rural roads, all of which are sealed - so a 4wd and offroad caravan are not required. It also makes an ideal section as part of a longer trip, or a lap of Australia.

The driving directions, accommodation options, timeframes and things to see and do in this itinerary are all our recommendations based on overt 30-years caravanning experience - but it is ultimately your choice to decide what you do during your travels! Even though we have recommended the number of days to stay in each place, you may decide to travel faster, or stay longer.

If you don't have a caravan, motorhome or similar, this itinerary may still be used as many of the accommodation options listed also have holiday cabins! This plan does not specifically cater toward travelling with pets, although our accommodation options do note when accommodation is pet friendly.
