Sydney to Alice Springs - via Outback NSW & Qld offers a quintessential Australian outback adventure. The journey takes us through a mix of sprawling farmland, dusty plains, and endless horizons.

Leaving the city of Sydney behind, the journey crosses the Great Dividing Range - stopping in the Blue Mountains and Bathurst, before winding through outback NSW. Here, the landscape transitions from golden wheatfields and grazing country to red earth and sparse scrub, with the horizon stretching seemingly forever.

Crossing into outback Queensland, the road takes us deeper into the heart of the outback, where towns like Cunnamulla, Longreach and Winton showcase the rugged spirit of the outback.

Throughout the 25-day plan, caravan travelers are treated to the expansive sky, dramatic sunsets, and the quiet rhythm of the road, culminating at Alice Springs - the red heart of Australia.

This itinerary is an excellent first trip for the caravanning novice. Travel is mainly on sealed highways well-suited to caravan travel. It also makes an ideal section as part of a longer trip or a lap of Australia. The driving directions, accommodation options, timeframes, and things to see and do listed in this itinerary are all our recommendations based on over 30 years of caravanning experience – but it is ultimately your choice to decide what you do during your travels! Even though we have recommended the number of days to stay in each place, you may decide to travel faster, or stay longer.

If you don’t have a caravan, motorhome, or similar – this itinerary could still be used as most of the accommodations listed also have holiday cabins!

Our itinerary passes through many towns and cities with service stations and other facilities, so fuel and supplies are available, although the long distances between towns in outback NSW, Queensland and the NT do need to be taken into consideration.

This plan does not specifically cater for travelling with pets, although our accommodation options do note when accommodation is pet friendly.
